As the first point of contact for visitors, the Visitor Engagement Coordinator plays a key leadership role in embodying and promoting the museum’s mission to foster inclusive dialogue and connection around contemporary art, architecture, and design. Here is what you will get to do:
SUMMARY:
This position serves as an ambassador for the museum’s values of creativity, collaboration, experimentation, and exchange, and works closely with all staff who interface with the public within SMoCA. Leads and is responsible for creating an excellent visitor experience at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, including greeting guests at the welcome desk, admission and museum merchandise transactions, and interactions with the Visitor Engagement Ambassadors inside the galleries.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Under the direction of supervisor)
- Provide a welcoming atmosphere for all guests, internal staff, and others who enter SMoCA. Share knowledge of exhibitions, programs, and the museum’s mission in an accessible and engaging manner.
- Oversee the daily operations of the welcome desk and museum merchandise, keeping it fresh, fun, and aligned with SMoCA’s mission.
- Open and close SMoCA admissions and Retail (includes opening and closing cash drawer, settling out reports)
- Ability to remain calm and professional in escalated interactions, experience deescalating and resolving customer service issues with patience, empathy, high level of sensitivity, and attention to detail.
- Handle transactions for admissions, memberships, donations, exchanges, refunds and museum merchandise, and solve technical issues that occur at the welcome desk and with guests and staff. This includes the ability to operate computer, printer, and telephone equipment used for transactions.
- Support SMoCA special events and programs outside of normal museum operating hours, as needed and assigned.
- Follow museum rules to maintain health and safety protocols for visitors and artwork.
Demonstrate a well-rounded understanding of Scottsdale Arts’s mission, vision and brand in an effort to sell One Membership to guests
- Facilitates SMoCA point of sale with visitors.
- Retail support functions, including floor restocking, back stockroom, straightening and cleaning, pulling online orders, and installing creative displays of museum merchandise.
- Reconciliation of retail and admissions accounting twice a week.
- Attends all SMoCA staff meetings and acts as liaison for welcome desk functions.
- Answer phones, check messages, and respond as needed.
- Works with the Marketing Department to disseminate communication that impacts admissions and accessibility for SMoCA as needed.
- Administer SMoCA Use form for internal requests
- Performs other duties as required
Here is what you will need to be successful:
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience
- Experience: 1+ years of experience in Museums with administrative support, and 1-2 years of customer service experience particularly in hospitality, retail, attractions, or cultural institutions.
- Attributes:
- Knowledge of and passion for contemporary art and public engagement;
- Exceptional organizational skills;
- Strong interpersonal communication skills,.
- Ability to work in a collaborative team environment with a positive and outgoing attitude;
- Experience handling cash, check and credit card transactions accurately and with integrity.
- Ability to multi-task, working simultaneously on numerous short-term and long-range projects;
- Digital proficiency, including Microsoft Office, Bloomberg Connects, retail software such as Shopify are a plus, databases such as EventPro, and project management software like Asana are a plus
- Work Environment: SMoCA is a fast-paced and team-focused environment. Work hours are fixed Tuesday and Wednesday 9-5pm, Thursday 10-7pm, Friday 9-5pm, and Saturday 10-5pm. Occasional evening hours as needed. with occasional evening hours as needed. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
