Friends of the Petaluma River – Watershed Classroom Program
Position Overview
Friends of the Petaluma River is seeking enthusiastic and passionate interns to assist in delivering environmental education in local classrooms and supporting field trips to Steamer Landing Park. Interns will have the opportunity to engage students in hands-on nature-based learning experiences, helping them connect with the environment while gaining valuable teaching and outdoor education experience.
Responsibilities
Assist with the delivery of environmental education lessons in classrooms, focusing on local ecology and sustainability.
Help lead field trips at Steamer Landing Park, guiding students through nature-based activities that explore the Petaluma River watershed.
Support the preparation and setup of educational materials and outdoor activities.
Act as a mentor and role model for students, encouraging curiosity and stewardship of the natural world.
Collaborate with program staff to adapt and improve lesson plans and field trip activities as needed.
Assist with administrative tasks related to program coordination and implementation.
Qualifications
Interest in environmental education, ecology, biology, or a related field.
Strong communication skills and ability to work with students in grades TK-6 (teaching experience is a plus, but not required).
Enthusiasm for the outdoors and comfort with leading outdoor activities in various weather conditions.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently as needed.
Willingness to learn and contribute to the success of the Watershed Classroom program.
Reliable transportation to schools and field trip sites within Petaluma.
Must successfully complete a background check prior to working with students.
Hours & Commitment
This is a paid, part-time internship, requiring approximately 8-12 hours per week. Interns will need to have some availability during elementary school hours to deliver the Watershed Classroom programming. This internship will begin in Fall of 2025 and conclude at the end of Spring 2026. The rate of pay for this position is $18.00 per hour. Payments are distributed biweekly on Fridays.
