IT Student Assistant - Advanced Computing

Advanced Computing collaborates with and supports faculty and student technology requirements throughout the grant and research project process, facilitating the development of accurate and comprehensive technology proposals and the integration of technical support within our campus and resources. 

Under the direction of Advanced Computing staff, this position will assist in supporting 

Cal Poly Pomona’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster. Under Advanced 

Computing staff's direction, the student will provide technical support and assistance to faculty, staff, and students using the HPC research environment. This position may also involve assisting with other departmental responsibilities as needed. 

This position will receive training from the advanced computing staff and guidance in daily tasks and operations. 

Tasks (Under the direction of Advanced Computing staff): 

  • Provide end-user support for the High-Performance Computing cluster. 
  • Offer technical support for the HPC environment to CPP faculty and students. 
  • Manage telephone calls, emails, and walk-in clients; document details of end-users’ requests, concerns, issues, or problems; resolve or escalate requests as appropriate. 
  • Create or seek solutions to improve end-users’ experience 
  • Utilize a ticketing system to track and communicate end-user requests. 
  • Ability to write documents such as tutorials, guides, and handbooks.
  • Learn new technologies and applications to support faculty/student research.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

 Recommended Skills: 

  • Proficiency in Linux OS 
  • Knowledge of Python and Bash   
  • Intermediate to advanced computer troubleshooting skills. Troubleshooting skills include but not limited to:
    • Resolve user and group permissions
    • Under networking concepts
    • Ability to troubleshoot coding errors 
  • Knowledge of SLURM, Anaconda, CUDA, Matlab, OpenMPI, Pycuda, Pytorch, Visual Studio Code, or Jupyter Notebook is desired but not required. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Must have a graduation date no earlier than May 2026. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to follow verbal and written technical instructions. 
  • Exceptional customer service skills and the ability to interact effectively with staff, students, and faculty. 
  • Capability to work in a team environment. 
  • Ability to adapt to new environments and disciplines.   
  • Curiosity to learn new technologies.
