About the Role

This paid, in-person internship in Washington, DC (25–40 hours per week over 12 weeks) joins Libertarianism.org, Cato’s project dedicated to being the leading source for the ideas and history of libertarianism.

You’ll collaborate with the Libertarianism.org team led by Director Jonathan Fortier—creating promotional materials, developing social media content, and assessing KPIs to inform strategy and growth.

The work blends marketing skill with intellectual curiosity: tracking trends, translating complex texts into accessible content, and adapting Cato scholarship for broad audiences that value freedom for everyone.

Responsibilities

  • Keeping current with trending and viral topics and sharing trends with stakeholders.
  • Analyzing social media and marketing data to guide future marketing strategies.
  • Researching libertarian perspectives on different topics and summarizing them for Libertarianism.org’s audience.
  • Listening to our latest podcasts and providing quotes and context for our marketing team.
  • Gathering quotes from different libertarian writers and thinkers for our social media.

Qualifications

  • Alignment with Cato’s mission and interest in the libertarian intellectual tradition; eagerness to learn.
  • Background in marketing, communication, business, or related field; able to quickly grasp and accurately summarize complex texts.
  • Knowledge of the libertarian social media scene; regular user of major platforms.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Outlook.
  • Experience with HubSpot, X/Twitter Analytics, and Google Analytics preferred; basic design skills (Canva/Photoshop) preferred.
  • Professionalism and reliability—meet deadlines, communicate proactively, incorporate feedback, and manage multiple projects.

The Cato Internship Program

Cato’s paid internships are available for undergraduates, recent graduates, graduate students, law students, and early-career professionals who are strongly committed to individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace—principles that together form libertarianism, also known as “classical liberalism,” “market liberalism,” or, to many of our international friends, simply “liberalism.”

All Cato interns participate in the same intensive seminar series, which covers a wide range of history, philosophy, policy, and professional development topics. Interns also assist with events and occasionally support Cato staff with other daily tasks.

Interns receive competitive pay. Part-time roles are adjusted accordingly and require a minimum of 25 hours per week. Program participants must be able to attend in person in Washington, DC.
