Microbiology Technician
We’re building a small-scale yeast R&D and propagation lab supporting New England breweries.
This role blends quality control, fermentation testing, and applied strain development — ideal for candidates with microbiology or biotechnology backgrounds who want hands-on fermentation and product-development experience.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare sterile media and propagate Saccharomyces cerevisiae and related yeast species.
Maintain and document the lab’s strain library; manage master and working cultures.
Conduct small-scale fermentations to evaluate new or adapted yeast strains for performance, flavor, and haze stability.
Support the development of proprietary yeast strains derived from approved culture-collection isolates (e.g., NRRL, ATCC) under company protocols.
Collect QC data (viability, cell counts, attenuation, pH, VDK cleanup) and record results in shared lab systems.
Assist with packaging prep and labeling for internal and external yeast sales.
Help refine and document SOPs for propagation, testing, and strain storage.
Collaborate with the brewing and quality teams on applied yeast projects that bridge lab and brewhouse.
Qualifications
A.S. or B.S. in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biology, or related field.
Familiarity with sterile technique, plating, and microscopy.
Strong recordkeeping and data-entry discipline.
Interest in fermentation, brewing, and strain innovation.
Preferred
1–2 years’ lab or fermentation experience (academic or commercial).
Familiarity with yeast propagation, wort fermentation, or QC procedures.
Full-time or internship opportunities available.
(All work is conducted within Great Yeast Labs’ proprietary R&D program; any strains or methods developed remain company property.)
