Principal Investigator — Lead Research Scientist

Job Description:

Clarus Labs is seeking a Principal Investigator (PI) to lead STTR-funded development of our patented kinetic-fluorogenic testing platform, which delivers lab-grade chemical analysis in under 10 minutes for food safety, environmental monitoring, and diagnostic applications. Founded in October 2024, we're at the critical transition from benchtop validation to field-deployable commercial product.

What You'll Do: The PI will design and execute validation studies, optimize assay protocols across diverse sample matrices, and conduct research to explore applications of the technology in adjacent markets. Day-to-day responsibilities include experimental design, data analysis, regulatory documentation (AOAC accreditation prep), and cross-functional work with our engineering and commercial teams. This is a hands-on role for someone who thrives at the intersection of rigorous science and practical application.

What We're Looking For: Candidates with research experience in analytical chemistry, food science, biochemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering, or related fields. While experience with fluorescence-based assays, chromatography, or food/agricultural testing is valuable, our developed method is designed to be straightforward and accessible. We're looking for curious, innovative problem-solvers who can help translate chemistry into reliable, user-friendly tools.

Position Details: This is a flexible 6-12 month appointment (duration based on mutual fit and preference) with potential for conversion to permanent full-time employment based on continued SBIR funding and company growth. We offer competitive salary, meaningful equity participation, and for exceptional candidates, the opportunity for additional ownership as part of a founding team role.

Why Join Clarus: Shape a breakthrough technology from the ground up. Work directly with founders, industry partners, and a multidisciplinary team to solve real problems that impact food safety and quality. This is a rare opportunity to be PI on a federally funded project while building equity in an early-stage deeptech company.

Desired start date: January 2026
