Intern Civil Environmental Engineer Scientist - Water Utility

The Dedham Westwood Water District (DWWD) is seeking to fill the supporting role of intern (Co-op).  The placement is for a six-month period and will support day-to-day operations of various departments at the Water Utility.  We are looking for a motivated self-starter with excellent communication skills.  The position will vary week to week.  Opportunities will be available to work with the distribution system superintendent, staff engineer, and water treatment plant superintendent. 

Opportunities for experience will include:

Distribution / Engineering Department (3-4 days per week):

  • Work on systems managing our information systems management, leak detection, and record keeping.
  • Perform field GPS surveying and some construction inspection.
  • Assist in project management, engineering design, flow, and pressure testing.
  • Assist in asset management upgrades as the district continues to advance their use of Utility Cloud, cloud-based asset management software and integration with a new billing system.

Plant Production Department (1-2 days per week)

  • Work with Superintendent and Supervisor to learn about treatment plant operation.
  • Assist in performing water quality sampling.

Customer Service Department (up to 1 day per week): 

  • Assist the staff in the implementation of a new meter billing system helping to update and ensure data integration and documentation is accurate.
  • Assist the staff in making appointments and updating database for backflow testing.

The DWWD is planning several major construction projects for 2026: water main replacement, an expansion to a water treatment plant for PFAS removal and the construction of new booster pump station.    

The work schedule runs Monday through Friday.  The office is closed for all state and national holidays. The work hours are flexible 7am-3pm or 8am-4pm. The rate of pay will be $23.50 per hour for no more than 40 hours per week.  There is public transportation for those that do not have access to a vehicle.  The MBTA Commuter Rail is a short walk away (Dedham Corporate Center via the Franklin/Foxboro line) and MBTA Bus is also available in the vicinity.   

Minimum Prerequisites: the candidate must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass pre-employment drug screening.  

Candidates with coursework experience in: civil engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering and environmental science degrees will be given priority.

Valuable skills to support this position include experience with Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, Trimble GPS equipment, and laboratory experience.
