Title: Controls and Instrumentation Engineer Summer Intern (Electrical Engineer)
Location: St. Paul, MN
Summary: Responsible for design, implementation, test, and support of electrical equipment, wiring, control equipment and data acquisition systems used in wind tunnel and hypersonic ground test projects. This is a diverse role that is a true engineering internship requiring you to apply what you have learned in school to fast moving projects. In this role you will be paired up with a mentor that will ensure you have what you need to be successful. This role includes electrical design, control architecture and validation calculations. This is a highly collaborative role that gives you an opportunity to learn from the industry’s best while contributing to significant projects.
Responsibilities:
- Design & Component Selection (30%) – Support your Controls and Instrumentation Lead by completing design solutions for various wind tunnel controls and data acquisition systems. Support the team by researching and selecting well suited products. Partner with designers and project team to deliver design package (drawings, BOMs, Etc.). Examples include electronic subsystems, including data acquisition systems, control and integration of electro-mechanical valves and instrumentation (temperatures, pressures, flow, etc.), control loops, electrical control systems, and control panel layouts.
- Analysis (10%) – Validate designs by completing calculations (e.g. load predictions) and complete safety and risk reduction activities (FMEA, Hazard Analysis, etc.)
- Document & Present (10%) - Document and present work in accordance with quality and customer requirements. Prepare design criteria, calculation packages, procurement specifications, technical reports, design verification & validation plans. Present in internal meetings and possibly customer meetings.
- Improvements (50%) - Assist the Controls group by completing an improvement project that has a meaningful impact to quality, accuracy or efficiency.
Required Qualifications/Education:
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited university or related discipline.
Preferred Experience and Competencies:
- Exposure to automation, control or data acquisition systems (hobby or academic)
- Familiarity with various sensor types (thermocouple, RTD’s, pressure transducer, switches, etc.)
- Hands-on exposure (e.g. design + build activities) desirable.
- Exposure to P&ID drawings (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams) is a plus.
- Must be a self-starter, able to ask questions and prioritize workload.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and positive attitude.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team.
Physical/Environmental Requirements:
- Due to U.S. State Department restrictions on access to technology, candidates must provide proof of being a “U.S. Persons” as defined by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
- Full-Time Summer Internship (May-August)
- Occasional evenings and weekend work determined by project requirements for certain test campaigns.
- Travel
- Hybrid, In-Office, Remote
- Potentially operating manual air control valves for test facilities and occasionally lifting to 50 lbs.
Compensation
- $26.00-$30.00
