Location: Birmingham, AL (work from home)
Hours: 28–32 hours per week, flexible schedule
Salary Range: $50,000+ annually, based on experience. This part-time position offers flexible scheduling, unlimited PTO, and a remote work environment.

Urban Purpose is a Christian nonprofit serving unhoused men and women at the Compound, a downtown day shelter that offers showers, laundry, food, clothing, wellness opportunities, and rest from life on the streets. Position Summary
The Director of Development and Engagement plays a key leadership role in expanding Urban Purpose’s reach, resources, and relationships. This individual leads all aspects of fundraising, donor and volunteer engagement, brand development, and communication initiatives that strengthen community partnerships and sustain the organization’s growth.
The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, creative, resourceful, and grounded in faith—someone who can think strategically, execute effectively, and tell the Urban Purpose story with clarity and compassion.
Primary Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising and communications strategy that integrates donor cultivation, sponsorships, volunteer engagement, and community outreach.
- Lead and execute a capital campaign to fund Urban Purpose’s next phase of growth, including a new facility, and collaborate in hiring and onboarding a future Programs Director.
- Build and strengthen relationships with donors, churches, businesses, and community partners to expand engagement and support.
- Increase brand awareness through storytelling, outreach, and consistent digital and print communication.
- Oversee messaging and design for all fundraising campaigns, ensuring cohesive branding and timely execution across web, email, and social channels.
Additional Responsibilities
- Plan and manage major community and fundraising events (Stack the Compound, Spring Fling, Boston Butt Fundraiser, A Seat at the Table, Gobble and Give, and seasonal campaigns).
- Research, identify, and apply for mission-aligned grants; manage associated reporting and compliance requirements.
- Maintain accurate donor and grant records; ensure compliance with reporting and documentation standards.
- Nurture ongoing partnerships with churches, businesses, and organizations for serve days, drives, and collaborative fundraisers.
- Manage website content and develop social media and email strategies that drive engagement and advance development goals.
Qualifications
- 3–5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, communications, or community engagement preferred.
- Proven success in donor cultivation, campaign management, or partnership development.
- Excellent writing and communication skills with the ability to express a strong, mission-aligned brand voice.
- Strong organizational and project management skills; able to lead multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Creative and collaborative, with a heart for ministry and community transformation.
- Proficiency with donor management systems and digital communication platforms.
