Historic St. Mary’s City (HSMC) is a living history museum located in Southern Maryland, dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of the first capital of Maryland. This internship provides a unique opportunity to work with the Maryland Dove, a wooden tall ship docked at HSMC. The intern will assist with sanding, painting, varnishing, ropework, caulking, sail‑cloth construction, shop upkeep, and other tasks related to the ship’s upkeep and up‑rigging. Training includes orientation to facilities, safety procedures, and mentorship from the Dove crew.

Overview of Responsibilities:

Participate in various maintenance tasks for the upkeep and up-rigging of the Maryland Dove and her associated small crafts. Tasks may include sanding and prepping wood and metal surfaces, painting and varnishing, learning and applying rope craft and knotwork, caulking planking seams, stitching and constructing sail cloth and covers, contributing to the construction of a crew training manual, shop upkeep, and other tasks as assigned. 

Training & Mentoring:

Intern will receive initial orientation to the facilities and equipment utilized in maintaining historic ships at HSMC. Introductions to the crew will establish points of contact for questions, collaboration, and continued support. Safety procedures will be made known, and intern will be initiated into ongoing maintenance processes and tasks. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Interest in maritime history.
  • Willingness to work with your hands in a manner that is often messy.
  • Ability to work with a team and follow instruction. 
  • Ability to self motivate and seek guidance as needed.
  • Must be an SMCM student in good standing.
