Integrated Humanities Teacher

The Gardner Academy and Co-op project is focused on developing whole, thriving humans through rigorous academics and intentional character formation. Students read deeply, write clearly, and learn through Socratic inquiry, grounded in virtue, reflection, and service. The Methow Valley is our classroom, where classical wisdom meets modern relevance.

Located four hours from Seattle near North Cascades National Park, the Methow offers exceptional outdoor access and a close-knit community.

This year (winter and spring 2026) we’re operating as a homeschool co-op. We’re seeking a part-time collaborative educator to lead integrated humanities for three 6th–7th grade students, possibly growing to five students. The ideal candidate loves language and literature, builds strong relationships, teaches across disciplines, and contributes to school-wide leadership. Candidates should be eager to collaborate, uphold dignity and respect, and guide students with wisdom, care, and high expectations.

Next year (fall 2026 and beyond), there is an opportunity for this to grow into a teaching or leadership role in a new independent school.

Responsibilities

  • Teach integrated humanities (spelling, vocabulary, grammar, writing, literature, history).
  • Coordinate with other teachers on interdisciplinary curriculum.
  • Support core skill mastery (math + language arts) using adaptive tools and other approaches.
  • Differentiate instruction while maintaining high expectations for every learner.
  • Communicate weekly with parents and students on plans and progress.
  • Lead and support community service.
  • Serve as an advisor; support social-emotional learning and responsibility.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in English, History, Language Arts Education, or a related field.
  • Middle and/or high school teaching experience.
  • Experience designing humanities and interdisciplinary curriculum.
  • Comfort using technology for instruction, assignments, and tracking progress.
  • Strong organization, follow-through, and attention to detail.
  • Clean driving record.
  • First Aid certification.

Curriculum

We are focused on building strong writers and critical thinkers with a lifelong love of reading. Students write analytical, personal, creative, and persuasive pieces while building mastery of grammar and vocabulary. Through discussion, active listening, and Socratic questioning, students learn to explain why they think what they think and engage thoughtfully with texts from across cultures and eras—especially classics.

Students will learn to:

  • Read closely and analyze meaning, form, and context.
  • Write with clarity, precision, and persuasion.
  • Speak and discuss ideas at a high school level or beyond.
  • Synthesize complex ideas across texts and perspectives.
  • Engage respectfully with differing viewpoints.
  • Take ownership of their learning and classroom community.
