Reptile Zookeeper Intern
We are looking for animal-loving individuals to join our team for the summer of 2025. The goal of this internship is to further develop your animal-keeping and interpretive skills working in a professional environment.
As an intern, you’ll be working closely with other Zookeepers to educate our zoo visitors about the species we keep on display, as well as helping maintain a large collection of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. You’ll be provided with hands-on projects and daily tasks that will involve cleaning, feeding, handling, and teaching with many different species. Interns will be able to apply classroom based knowledge to living animals, gaining the hands-on skills necessary to acquire a job in the professional animal keeping industry. Snake Discovery strives to make this internship as realistic and educational as possible.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
· Cleaning enclosures for various reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.
· Preparing and feeding balanced diets to the animals in the building.
· Offering guided tours to visitors in the reptile exhibit area.
· Teaching with live animals in the exhibit area and answering visitors’ questions.
· Assisting with janitorial tasks needed to keep the building clean and presentable.
· Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education:
· Basic knowledge of reptile care and husbandry.
· Must be comfortable feeding and handling reptiles, amphibians, and occasional invertebrates.
· Ability to work efficiently without getting distracted by the animals.
· Must have good verbal skills and be comfortable with a crowd for guided zoo tours.
· Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in biology, wildlife, zoology, or other related animal field of study.
· Minimum GPA of 3.0
· Must be willing to work 10-15 hours weekly May (or June) through August, or 200 hours throughout the summer season, depending on your college’s requirements to earn an internship credit.
