History of Medicine Archives Intern
JOB SUMMARY:
The Phillip Capozzi, M.D. Library invites applications from graduate students in Library and Information Science for a short-term paid summer 2026 internship. This opportunity offers hands-on experience in academic librarianship, scholarly publishing, or archival work within a dynamic medical library environment starting July 1st, 2026.
Gain experience in archives by assisting with a project to digitize and transcribe a collection of handwritten nineteenth-century manuscripts.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Digitize bound handwritten volumes
- Manage page scans in automated transcription platform
- Proofread, revise and mark up transcribed text
- Shadow Archives staff in select daily activities.
- Deliver a final presentation on their summer experiences to the Capozzi Library staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience
- Currently enrolled in a relevant master’s degree program
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to read nineteenth-century cursive handwriting sufficiently to proofread the accuracy of machine transcription
- Ability to work for a minimum of 12 hours per week over the summer of 2026. The majority of these hours must be in person on the Valhalla, NY campus of New York Medical College
