STEM Curriculum Intern

Internship Description: Kamin Science Center connects people with science, igniting curiosity that endures for a lifetime. The Science Center does so in many ways through onsite and offsite events, exhibits, classroom programs, and more. The Learning and Engagement Department (L&E) connects these teams and supports them in strategic planning, grant project management, program development and evaluation, and organizing and developing content. L&E also plays a leading role in connecting the Science Center and educators. 

The intern will assist in the development and reorganization of STEM program content. The intern may also assist members of the L&E team to plan and implement events and programming for Pre-K, school-age children, and their families. This may include assisting in the creation of STEM activity kits that will be supplied to early childhood classroom teachers, developing content for classroom programs and family night events, preparing and organizing program supplies, and assisting in implementation of programming.

 

Responsibilities:

  • The intern will have a hand in the development and reorganization of the STEM content for several programs, events, and activities. This combination of public-facing and behind-the-scenes work will help the intern understand how the museum functions, identify content gaps, and gain informal teaching experience.
  • Assist the L&E team in the writing and planning of STEM activities and programs
  • Assist the L&E team with the organization of program supplies as needed
  • Supporting STEM programs and events at the museum, and potentially offsite, as part of a team of educators as needed
  • Assist the L&E team in the reorganization of STEM content
  • They will be evaluated on punctuality, professional interaction with guests, communication skills, and organizational skills. 

 

Skills Required:

  • Knowledge of STEM
  • Familiarity with the PA educational standards
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with accessibility principles
  • Creative thinking
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Teams, Word, and Outlook
  • Lesson plan and/or curriculum writing experience is desired but not required
  • K-12 classroom or informal education experience is desired but not required

 

Skills to be Learned:

  • Gain working knowledge of how families and students of all ages interact in an informal science environment
  • Develop and test STEM content as part of a team
  • Grow understanding of STEELs standards
  • Gain insight into the content writing, evaluation, testing, and revision process at the museum
  • Hands-on education with learners of all ages
  • Organizational skills

 

Parameters:

  • The intern will never be alone with or solely responsible for children, as a permanent staff member will always accompany them offsite if necessary. 
  • The intern will also not have to carry anything greater than 10lbs, though may assist with carrying larger objects (tables, packages) upon volunteering. 
  • The intern will not have to use any computer programming languages to manage the cloud library in Teams. 
  • The intern will not be required to attend events outside of typical business hours, though they may volunteer to do so (it is paid time).

 

Training Methods:

  • Internship orientation, one-on-one shadowing for the first few days, weekly meetings with their supervisor following their first week, observance of stage shows and onsite programming 
  • Their supervisor will provide oral and informal written feedback throughout the internship on at least a weekly basis, and formal written feedback at the conclusion of the term.

 

Time Frame:

  • 120 hours minimum during the semester

 

Clearances

  • Upon acceptance into the program, all interns are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances. Act 33 and 34 Clearances are free for interns.
  • Interns who have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34). 
  • Interns who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34) plus an FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114).
