The Challenge
We're looking for a Transportation Construction Supervisor to join our New Hanover County Maintenance team.
In this role, you will:
- Lead teams doing preventive maintenance, repairs, and construction of state-maintained roads in New Hanover County.
- Operate 2+ pieces of equipment, including backhoes, tandem dump trucks, motor graders, front end loaders, forklifts, force feed loaders, asphalt distributors, asphalt patch/crack sealing machines, track excavators, skid steers, or sweepers.
- Install traffic & erosion control devices.
- Clear right of ways.
- Perform roadway grading and machining of unpaved roads.
- Perform pavement repairs, pipe installations, and other drainage tasks.
- Inspect contract work and monitor tasks performed.
- Provide emergency response, including traffic accident clean-ups, snow and ice removal, and other emergency responses.
- Train and operate equipment associated with more senior positions.
What You Bring
- Experience performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate, or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris.
- Ability to act upon verbal and written communications.
- Work Zone Safety experience and understanding of NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.
- Roadway maintenance and repair experience in 1+ of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, snow and ice removal, crack sealing, full depth patching, or pothole patching.
- Recordkeeping experience, such as tracking staff and equipment time and recording materials quantities used.
- Experience planning and organizing work.
- Experience supervising workers and directing work crew daily activities.
- Ability to work effectively while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, and during bad weather.
- Ability to work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Strength to lift 50+ pounds, exert 100+ pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and 10+ pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Safety toe footwear.
- Agility to climb steep & uneven terrain.
- Ability to safely operate Class A CDL-required equipment/trucks with manual and automatic transmissions
- A Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement. (Don't have it? Still apply! You can get it through our on-the-job training program within 360 days of hire).
Education & Experience
- High School/GED diploma, and
- 6+ years of progressive experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Notes
- This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during bad weather and other extreme circumstances, including responding to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, etc.
